Club History
In 1971, not long after the opening of a new school at Para Hills East, the first soccer teams to carry the Para Hills East banner began competing in the Elizabeth and Districts Junior Soccer Association with U/8's, U/10's and U/11's teams. The club was soon established thanks to the efforts of Chairman Allan Clarke and others such as Dave Northcott, Ron Whitehead and Ray Warner.
Eventually the first senior Para Hills East sides emerged and began competing in the South Australian Amateur Soccer League's Division 7 in 1978. Para Hills East also entered an U/18's in the Amateur League's Junior Competition in 1978. Representing East seniors then were the likes of A Gray, W Edwards, B Nicholson, A Wood, R Jenkins, W Holdon, A Holmes, M Brigden, G Horay, I Luke, E McGill, C Lacey, M Hilditch, G McGibbon and S Ward. The seniors began well finishing 3rd and were promoted to Division 6 for the 1979 season fielding 1st, Reserves and U/18 sides.
The 1979 season saw the 1st team again finish 3rd & gaining promotion to Division 5 as well as the Reserves and U/18's finishing top in their respective divisions. That year the East's top scorers were T Ferschel (16 goals) and G Horay (13) and the club saw the emerging talents of Martin Ryan.
The following 1980 season saw Para Hills East, playing at the Ingle Farm High School, they stumbled as they finished second bottom in Division 5 and were relegated back to Division 6. However there were signs of things to come when the U/18's side won the Championship for the second year running.
With a move to the Levels at Pooraka in 1981 Para Hills East fielded 3 senior teams and 2 U/18's teams in the Amateur League competitions. The 1 st team rediscovered success and ended up in second position on the table at season's end to regain promotion back to Division 5. T Ferschel (15 goals) and S Buttery (13) were the seasons top scorers.
The following season Para Hills East moved to their current home base at Eldridge Reserve, as it was then called, and finished undefeated at the top of Division 5, whilst the Reserves were runners-up. This time I Wood (17 goals) and G Gannon (14) led the scoring. Others in the side included Martin Ryan, S Heath, G Harris, M McKellar, A Bushton, A Knox, T Reschel, K Anderson and S Buttery.
1983 saw the East marching on as both the 1st and Reserve sides finished on top of the Division 4 tables. K Harris and I Wood polled well in the League's Best and Fairest voting with I Wood (21 goals) topping the clubs goal scorers, whilst T Ferschel (14) and S Buttery (13) provided strong backup. Division 3 was conquered in 1984 as again both 1st and Reserves finished top of the tables, with Martin Ryan leading the League's Best and Fairest voting and G Thompson (11 goals) leading the attack.
The charge faltered in 1985 when Para Hills East finished 9 th in Division 2 and were relegated back to Division 3. This occurred with Martin Ryan polling 21 votes in the League's Best and Fairest count.
The East bounced straight back with a vengeance in 1986 finishing top of Division 3 and Martin Ryan finished as runner-up in the Division 3 Best and Fairest count. That year the team included players like M Elsey, D Hassell, T Atkinson, A Mathews, S Heath, W Davies, A Cullen, C McGill, D Farr, S Buttery and G Ryan.
Consolidating their position in the Division 2 in the 1987 and 1988 seasons saw the addition to the 1st team with players like P Smith, G Coleman, G Aitken, S Douglas, B French, T Gregg, K Flemming and K Ryan. With the addition of K Booth, who led the scoring with 18 goals, T Cornish and S Foulkes. In 1989 the East took out the Division 2 title and gained promotion to the Amateur League's top flight. The C1 team also took out the Division 10 title for the second consecutive year.
Over the 1990 and 1991 season Para Hills East provided strong competition and finished 4th in their first season in Division 1 and 3rd the following season. That year the club fielded a total of 6 senior teams in the Amateur League.
The 1992 season, with Keith Ryan as coach, Para Hills East reached the peak of Amateur soccer and claimed the Division 1 title by 5 points. It also saw K Booth win the Munro Medal as the League's Best and Fairest. However the party was spoiled slightly when the 1st team lost 2-0 to Salisbury Inter in the Coca-Cola Challenge Cup.
The 1st team retained the Division 1 Championship the following year just nudging out Elizabeth Vale on the goals for rule. To top off the year further the East won the Coca-Cola Challenge Cup beating Elizabeth Vale 3-0 in the final and G Aitken would have been runner up in the League's Best and Fairest if he wasn't ineligible.
The strength of the Para Hills East side at this point in time was emphasized in 1994 when they won the Division 1 title for the third year in a row and narrowly lost the Coca-Cola Cup Challenge to Salisbury Inter 2-1 in a replay of the final. The team that year comprised players like J McCormack, the leagues top scorer on 11 goals and the clubs highest poller in the league's Best and Fairest, R Watkins, M Elsey, G Aitken, M Deakin, B French, L Hannessen, K Fleming, K, Booth, D Hassell, S Foulkes and T McHale.
In the seasons since, Para Hills East have been unable to reach the heady heights of 1992 to 1994 and seasons have finished with the club placed in the middle of the table. The standout players for the club through this time have been M Deakin and M Elsey. In the lower division teams, the club tasted success in 1995 when both the Division 11 and Division 12 teams claimed their respective league titles.
